And I say: Aisha’s unrestricted statement, may Allah be pleased with her, is to be understood in light of these hadiths. When Mu’ādha asked her, “How many rak'ahs did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, perform for the Duhā prayer?” she replied, “Four rak'ahs, and he would perform as many more as Allah willed.” Recorded by Muslim. (1)
As for performing it two rak'ahs at a time, this is indicated by the general import of his statement, peace and blessings be upon him: “Prayer by night and day is performed two rak'ahs at a time.” (2)
A Muslim may also perform all four consecutively, like a four-rak'ah prayer. This is supported by
(1) A *sahīh* hadith.
Muslim recorded it in the “Book of the Prayer of Travelers and Its Shortening, Chapter on the Recommendation to Perform the Duhā Prayer, Its Minimum Being Two Rak'ahs, Its Most Complete Form Eight Rak'ahs, and Its Intermediate Form Four or Six Rak'ahs, and Encouragement to Observe It Regularly,” hadith no. 719.
(2) A *sahīh* hadith.
Its sources were cited previously. See the second issue in (2-2-2).
Note: A version of the aforementioned hadith of Umm Hāni reads: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed eight rak'ahs as the Duhā voluntary prayer, concluding with the *salām* after every two rak'ahs.” The underlying hadith appears in both *Sahīh* collections, but not with this wording.
Abū Dāwūd recorded it with this wording in the “Book of Prayer, Chapter on the Duhā Prayer,” hadith no. 1234 (2/234).
The chains in both Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Khuzayma include Iyād ibn Abd Allāh, from whom Abd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated. Abū Hātim said of Iyād, “He is not strong,” while Ibn Hibbān included him in *al-Thiqāt*. Al-Sājī said, “Ibn Wahb narrated from him hadiths that are open to criticism.” Yahyā ibn Maīn said, “He is weak in hadith.” Abū Sālih said, “He is reliable and was a prominent figure in Medina, though there is something questionable in his hadith.” Al-Bukhārī said, “His hadiths are rejected.” See *Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb* (8/201).
I say: Here, Ibn Wahb narrates the hadith from him. Given this narrator’s standing, it appears that a report he transmits alone cannot be accepted, and he alone transmitted this wording. Allah knows best.
Al-Albānī graded the hadith with this wording weak in his commentary on *Sahīh Ibn Khuzayma* (2/234), and explained its defect in detail in *Tamām al-Minna* (pp. 258–259).
