Bughyat al-Mutatawwi fi Salat al-TatawwuMuhammad ibn Umar Bazmul

Note: The hadith of Ubayy ibn Kaʿb indicates that, upon completing Witr, it is prescribed for a Muslim to say three times, “Glory be to the Sovereign, the Most Holy,” drawing out the last recitation.

(6-3) The Qunūt in Witr

This section covers the following issues:

The first issue: the ruling on the qunūt in Witr.

The second issue: its place.

The third issue: its manner.

The details are as follows:

(1-6-3) The Ruling on the Qunūt in Witr

The qunūt in Witr is recommended, not obligatory.

The evidence that it is recommended is that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would sometimes perform Witr without making the qunūt. This indicates that the qunūt in Witr is not obligatory, for had it been obligatory, he, peace and blessings be upon him, would not have omitted it on occasion. And Allah knows best.
