Bughyat al-Mutatawwi fi Salat al-TatawwuMuhammad ibn Umar Bazmul

Accordingly, his practice, peace and blessings be upon him, shows that his instruction, “Make Witr the last of your prayers at night,” is only guidance toward what is best. It is therefore permissible for a Muslim to pray after Witr, and there is no blame in doing so.

This is further confirmed by the report from Thawbān, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey, and he said: “This journey is arduous and burdensome. When any one of you has performed Witr, let him pray two rakʿahs. If he later awakens for the night prayer, well and good; otherwise, those two rakʿahs will suffice for him.” It was recorded by al-Dārimī, Ibn Khuzaymah, and Ibn Hibbān. (1)

This shows that the purpose of the instruction to make Witr the last prayer of the night is to ensure that one does not neglect to perform a rakʿah of Witr. Performing two rakʿahs afterward does not contradict this, as is established by both his practice, peace and blessings be upon him, and his instruction (2). And Allah knows best.

Ibn Khuzaymah, may Allah have mercy on him, gave this hadith of Thawbān the following chapter heading: “Chapter: Mention of the evidence that prayer after Witr is permissible for anyone who wishes to pray after it, and that the two rakʿahs which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to perform after Witr were not exclusive to him to the exclusion of his community, since the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed us to perform two rakʿahs after Witr by way of recommendation and virtue, not as an obligatory command or prescribed duty.” (3) End quote.

(5-3) What Is Recited in Witr

It is prescribed for a Muslim to recite in the first rakʿah of Witr: “Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High,”

(1) Its chain of transmission is good. It was narrated by al-Dārimī (1/374), Ibn Khuzayma in his *Sahīh* (hadith no. 1106), and Ibn Hibbān, as cited in *al-Ihsān* (6/315, hadith no. 2577). Al-Albānī also included the hadith in *Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīha* (under no. 1993), and the editor of *al-Ihsān* stated: “Its chain of transmission is strong.” (2) See *Silsilat al-Ahādīth al-Sahīha* (4/646, hadith no. 1993). (3) *Sahīh Ibn Khuzayma* (2/159).
