Bughyat al-Mutatawwi fi Salat al-TatawwuMuhammad ibn Umar Bazmul

Question: What is the ruling on the two rakʿahs that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to perform seated after Witr?

In answer to this question, I say:

He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Make Witr the last of your prayers at night.” Recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. (1)

It was noted earlier that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would occasionally perform two brief rakʿahs seated after Witr.

(1) An authentic hadith. It was narrated by al-Bukhārī in the Book of Witr, chapter “One Should Make the Last of His Prayer Witr,” hadith no. 998; and by Muslim in the Book of Travelers’ Prayer and Its Shortening, chapter “The Night Prayer Is Performed Two Rakʿahs at a Time, and Witr Is One Rakʿah at the End of the Night,” hadith no. 751.
