the last of them.” Recorded by al-Hākim. (1) It was also reported from some of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them. (2)

Further evidence that Witr may be performed with three rakʿahs is the previously cited hadith of Abū Ayyūb: “Whoever wishes to perform Witr with three rakʿahs may do so.”

  • (4-4-3) Witr with Five Rakʿahs:

Witr may be performed with five rakʿahs in either of two ways:

The first is to perform two rakʿahs, then another two rakʿahs, and then one rakʿah.

The second is to perform five consecutive rakʿahs, sitting only at the end.

The evidence for all of this is as follows:

(a) The previously cited hadith of Abū Ayyūb: “Whoever wishes to perform Witr with five rakʿahs may do so.”

(1) Al-Hākim’s *al-Mustadrak* (1:304). See also *Fath al-Bārī* (2:481). (2) See al-Hākim’s *al-Mustadrak* (1:304), and al-Maqrīzī’s *Abridgment of Ibn Nasr’s Qiyām al-Layl* (p. 126). A useful point: The eminent scholar al-Albānī said: “There is no authentic and explicit hadith supporting the performance of three rak‘ahs of Witr with two tashahhuds, in the manner of Maghrib prayer. Indeed, this practice entails some degree of reprehensibility. We therefore prefer not to sit between the two rak‘ahs of *shaf‘* and the one rak‘ah of Witr. If one does sit, one should conclude the prayer with *taslīm*. This is preferable for the reasons stated above. Allah grants success; there is no Lord besides Him.” End quote. *Salāt al-Tarāwīh* (p. 98). I say: In *Nayl al-Awtār* (3:44), al-Shawkānī held that the more cautious course is to refrain altogether from performing Witr as three consecutive rak‘ahs. In my view, there is no basis for such caution, given that it is established that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions performed three rak‘ahs of Witr with a single tashahhud at the end. I therefore hold the same view as al-Albānī. Allah knows best.
