the break of dawn is the time for Witr. They differed concerning the period after that, until the Fajr prayer is performed. It has also been reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, instructed that Witr be performed before dawn.” End quote. (1)
I say: For one who fears that he will not rise at the end of the night, it is preferable to pray at its beginning. As for one who is confident that he will rise, it is preferable for him to delay it until the end of the night, based on the established report from Jābir, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever fears that he will not rise at the end of the night should perform Witr at its beginning; and whoever expects to rise at its end should perform Witr at the end of the night, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed, and that is better.” Recorded by Muslim. (4-3) The Number and Manner of the Rakʿahs of the Night Prayer and Witr
The night prayer and Witr consist of eleven rakʿahs; the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not exceed that number. Various manners of performing them have been reported from him. Whichever of these manners a Muslim follows will suffice. They are as follows:
- (1-4-3) Performing the Night Prayer Two Rakʿahs at a Time and Witr with One Rakʿah:
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar reported that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, about the night prayer. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, replied: “The night prayer is performed two rakʿahs at a time. If any of you fears the approach of dawn, let him pray one rakʿah, thereby making the prayers he has already performed odd-numbered.” Another narration states: “A man stood and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! How is the night prayer performed?’” Recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. (3)
