Bughyat al-Mutatawwi fi Salat al-TatawwuMuhammad ibn Umar Bazmul

say: “Witr is a duty.” Recorded by Ahmad and Abū Dāwūd. (1)

c) Abū Ayyūb al-Ansārī reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Witr is a duty for every Muslim. Whoever wishes to perform Witr in five units may do so; whoever wishes to perform it in three units may do so; and whoever wishes to perform it in one unit may do so.”

Another narration states: “Witr is a duty. Whoever wishes may perform it in seven units; whoever wishes, in five; whoever wishes, in three; whoever wishes, in one; and whoever wishes may perform it by gestures.” (2)

(1) A *hasan li-ghayrihi* hadith (sound by virtue of corroborating evidence). Ahmad recorded it in *al-Musnad* (4/274, *al-Fath al-Rabbānī*), Abū Dāwūd in the Book of Prayer, chapter “Concerning One Who Does Not Perform Witr,” hadith no. 1419, and al-Hākim in *al-Mustadrak* (1/305). Al-Hākim said: “This is an authentic hadith. Abū al-Munīb al-Atakī was a trustworthy narrator from Marw whose reports are collected; neither al-Bukhārī nor Muslim recorded it.” I say: Abū al-Munīb—one of the narrators of this hadith—appears to be acceptable for use in supporting chains and corroborating reports, and this portion has supporting evidence. The remainder of the hadith—namely, “Whoever does not perform Witr is not one of us”—does not rise to the grade of *hasan* because it lacked corroborating evidence. Al-Albānī therefore graded the hadith weak on account of this additional wording in his critical edition of *al-Mishkāt* (1/399). Allah then enabled me to find the following corroborating report in Ibn Abī Shaybah’s *al-Musannaf* (2/297): Ibn Abī Shaybah said: Wakī related to us, from Khalīl ibn Murrah, from Muāwiyah ibn Murrah, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Whoever does not perform Witr is not one of us.” I say: Khalīl is weak, but his reports may be used for corroboration, Allah willing. This report therefore corroborates Abū al-Munīb’s hadith and raises its second portion to the grade of *hasan li-ghayrihi*. All praise is due to Allah for granting success. Among the reports corroborating the portion cited in the main text is the following hadith. (2) A *sahīh* (authentic) hadith. Abū Dāwūd recorded it in the Book of Prayer, chapter “The Ruling on Witr?” hadith no. 1421 (1/534, *Awn*); the quoted wording is his. Al-Nasāī also recorded it in the Book of Night Prayer and Voluntary Prayer During the Day, chapter “Mention of the Differences in Reports from al-Zuhrī Regarding Abū Ayyūb’s Hadith on Witr” (3/238–239); the alternate narration is his. It was also recorded by Ibn Mājah in the Book of Establishing the Prayer, chapter “Reports Concerning Witr in Three, Five, Seven, and Nine Units,” hadith no. 1190, and by al-Tahāwī in *Sharh Maānī al-Āthār* (1/291). Ibn Hibbān authenticated it (6/167, 170–171, hadith nos. 2407, 2410, and 2411, *al-Ihsān*), as did al-Hākim in *al-Mustadrak* (1/302).
