There is also the report of Mahmūd ibn al-Rabī al-Ansārī, who heard Itbān ibn Mālik al-Ansārī—may Allah be pleased with him—one of those who had attended Badr with the Messenger of Allah, say: “I used to lead my people among Banū Sālim in prayer. A valley lay between me and them, and whenever the rains came, it would flow, making it difficult for me to cross on my way to their mosque. I therefore went to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and said to him, ‘My eyesight has become impaired, and the valley between me and my people flows whenever the rains come, making it difficult for me to cross. I would therefore like you to come and pray in a place in my house that I may designate as a prayer place.’ The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—replied, ‘I will.’ The next morning, after the day had grown hot, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—came to me. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—asked permission to enter, and I admitted him. He did not sit down before asking, ‘Where in your house would you like me to pray?’ I pointed out the place where I wished to pray. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—stood and pronounced the takbīr, and we formed a row behind him. He prayed two units, then gave the salām, and we gave the salām when he did. I then asked him to remain for a meat-and-flour stew that was being prepared for him…”—to the end of the hadith. Reported by al-Bukhārī. (1)
Al-Bukhārī gave it the following chapter heading: “Chapter: Voluntary Prayer in Congregation. Anas and Aisha—may Allah be pleased with them both—related this from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him.” He then cited at length, through his chain of narration, the hadith of Mahmūd ibn al-Rabī.
I say: As for the hadith of Anas to which he referred, it is the one I presented shortly before, containing the words: “The orphan and I formed a row behind him…”
As for the hadith of Aisha, by it he was referring to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—performing the night vigil prayer
