Bughyat al-Mutatawwi fi Salat al-TatawwuMuhammad ibn Umar Bazmul

Muslim’s version states: “As for Maghrib, Ishā, and the Friday prayer, I prayed them with the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—in his home.”

In al-Tirmidhī’s narration: “I memorized from the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—ten rak‘ahs that he would offer by night and day.” (1)

(2-2) Description and Rulings of the Regular Sunnah Prayers

This chapter explains the regular sunnah prayer associated with each of the five obligatory prayers through five sections. Each obligatory prayer has a section devoted to its regular sunnah prayer, under which I have included the relevant issues.

The details are as follows:

(1-2-2) The Regular Sunnah Prayer of Fajr:

The following issues relate to this regular sunnah prayer:

(1) An authentic hadith. Al-Bukhārī records it in several places: in the Book of Tahajjud, chapter “The Two Rak'ahs before Zuhr” (hadith no. 1180), whose wording is cited here; in the chapter “Voluntary Prayer after the Obligatory Prayer” (hadith no. 1172), from which the additional wording is taken; in the chapter “Reports Concerning Voluntary Prayers Offered Two by Two” (hadith no. 1165); and in the Book of Friday Prayer, chapter “Prayer after the Friday Prayer” (hadith no. 937). Muslim records it in the Book of the Prayer of Travellers, chapter “The Merit and Number of the Regular Sunnah Prayers before and after the Obligatory Prayers” (hadith no. 729). Al-Tirmidhī records it in the Book of Prayer, chapter “Reports That the Two Rak'ahs Should Be Offered at Home” (hadith no. 434; 1/330, *Tuhfa*). Mālik records it in *Muwatta' Muhammad* (p. 296), with the addition: “He would not perform any prayer after the Friday prayer in the mosque until he had left; then he would offer two rak'ahs”; and in *Muwatta' al-Laythī* (1/180, *Tanwīr*). Al-Tahāwī records it in *Sharh Ma'ānī al-Āthār* (1/336), and al-Dārimī (1/1252; 1/486, *'Awn*), with wording similar to that in *Muwatta' Muhammad*. Al-Nasā'ī also records it in the Book of the Establishment of Prayer, chapter “Prayer after Zuhr” (2/119). See *Jāmi' al-Usūl* (6/4).
