— (2-16-4) Offering the Funeral Prayer in Congregation:
Offering the funeral prayer in congregation is obligatory (1), because the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—consistently offered it in congregation, and because of the general application of his statement—peace and blessings be upon him—“Pray as you have seen me pray.” Reported by al-Bukhārī. (2)
It is recommended that the number of worshippers be forty, based on the report of Kurayb, the freedman of Ibn Abbās, from Abd Allāh ibn Abbās. A son of his died at Qudayd or Usfān, so he said, “Kurayb, see how many people have gathered for him.” Kurayb said, “I went out and found that some people had gathered for him, so I informed him.” He asked, “Would you say that they number forty?” I replied, “Yes.” He said, “Bring him out, for I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say: ‘No Muslim man dies and has forty men who associate nothing with Allah stand to offer his funeral prayer without Allah accepting their intercession on his behalf.’” Reported by Muslim. (3)
If there are one hundred Muslims, Allah will accept their intercession on his behalf. This is based on the report of Ā’ishah—may Allah be pleased with her—who said that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “No deceased person has a group of Muslims numbering one hundred offer the prayer over him, all of them interceding for him, without their intercession being accepted on his behalf.” Reported by Muslim.
