- (1-16-4) The Ruling on the Funeral Prayer and Its Merit:
Offering the funeral prayer over a deceased Muslim is a communal obligation, for the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—commanded it in several hadiths, including the following:
Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī reported that one of the Prophet’s Companions died on the day of Khaybar. When this was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—he said, “Pray over your companion.” The people’s expressions changed at this, so he said, “Your companion secretly appropriated some spoils while fighting in the cause of Allah.” We searched his belongings and found some beads belonging to the Jews that were worth less than two dirhams. Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī. (3)
