- (3-15-4) Performing the Prayer for Rain at the Prayer Ground
The Sunnah is for the prayer for rain to be performed at the prayer ground, as indicated by the preceding hadiths. The people of Mecca are an exception: they perform it in the Sacred Mosque and do not leave it for another location. This was the established practice of the early generations—may Allah be pleased with them. (1)
The evidence that the prayer for rain is performed at the prayer ground includes the following:
The preceding hadith of Aisha: “The people complained to the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—about the lack of rain. He therefore ordered that a pulpit be set up for him at the prayer ground and appointed a day on which the people were to go out ...” Reported by Abū Dāwūd. (2)
The preceding hadith of Ibn Abbās: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—went out dressed plainly, displaying humility and beseeching Allah, until he reached the prayer ground. He then ascended the pulpit ...” Reported by the compilers of the Sunan collections. (3)
The hadith of Abdullāh ibn Zayd: “The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—went out to the prayer ground to pray ...” Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. (4)
