“And Abdullāh ibn Yazīd had seen the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him.” Reported by al-Bukhārī. (1)
Issue Three: The Prayer for Rain Is Performed Like the Eid Prayer
The prayer for rain is performed in the same manner as the Eid prayer. Seven takbīrs are pronounced in the first unit and five in the second, apart from the takbīr for bowing in each unit. These takbīrs are pronounced before the recitation.
The prayer for rain consists of two units in which the recitation is aloud, like the Eid prayer.
The evidence for this is:
Ishāq ibn Abdullāh ibn Kināna reported: Al-Walīd ibn Utba—who was the governor of Medina—sent me to Ibn Abbās to ask him about the Messenger of Allah’s prayer for rain. He replied: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—went out dressed plainly, displaying humility and beseeching Allah, until he reached the prayer ground. He then ascended the pulpit. He did not deliver a sermon like these sermons of yours; rather, he continued supplicating, beseeching Allah, and proclaiming His greatness. He then performed two units of prayer as he would for the Eid prayer.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī. (2)
