Al-Qawaid al-Hisan li-Tafsir al-QuranAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

then He set forth the story in detail.

Concerning the account of Adam He says, “We had already enjoined Adam beforehand, but he forgot, and We found in him no firm resolve” ⦗Ta Ha 115⦘; after this brief prelude He narrates the whole incident.

As for shifting, within one statement, from a point that is important to another that is even more deserving of emphasis, the Qur’an does so frequently.

One example is His censure of those who set up another god beside Allah and prop up their idolatry with the false claim that the saints and deities are children of Allah—beings of light that burst forth, assumed human form, and then returned to a luminous state. Allah says, “They have no knowledge of it, nor did their forefathers” ⦗Al-Kahf 5⦘, making it clear that their assertion rests on no knowledge whatsoever—and every utterance without knowledge is, by definition, invalid. He then openly exposes its repugnance: “Grave indeed is the word that comes out of their mouths” ⦗Al-Kahf 5⦘, and finally assigns it the lowest rank of falsehood: “They say nothing but a lie” ⦗Al-Kahf 5⦘.

Regarding those who deny the Resurrection He says, “No, their knowledge about the Hereafter has altogether failed them” ⦗An-Naml 66⦘—meaning that what knowledge they have is feeble, base, and sunk to the lowest depths, to be trusted only by a fool. He then proceeds to an even stronger indictment: “Rather, they are blind to it” ⦗An-Naml 66⦘; and blindness is the final stage of bewilderment and misguidance.

Of Noah, in establishing his mission and refuting those who branded him as clearly astray, He relates that Noah declared, “My people, I am not misguided” ⦗Al-Aʿrāf 61⦘. Once he had categorically denied any error, he affirmed his complete guidance, saying, “Rather, I am a messenger from the Lord of all worlds” ⦗Al-Aʿrāf 61⦘. He then rises to an even higher point—the very source of that guidance—namely revelation, the fountainhead of all right guidance: “I convey to you the messages of my Lord, I give you sincere counsel, and I know from Allah what you do not know” ⦗Al-Aʿrāf 61⦘. The same pattern appears with Hud, peace be upon him
