Their emergence and spread took place only after the Abbasid caliphate had grown weak, the Muslim community had fragmented, and the number of self-styled Muslim free-thinkers had multiplied; the voice of the innovators then rose above all others. This occurred under the rule of al-Muqtadir toward the end of the third century AH, when the Qarmatians—the ʿUbaydiyyah, the Qaddāḥiyyah (1)—first appeared in the western lands and, not long afterward, moved into Egypt.

Around the same time, it is said that the collection of mukūs (2)—illicit tolls and taxes—was introduced into Islam.

Soon after that the Persian Buyids came to power. Many of them were steeped in outright heresy and grave innovations, and during their reign the Banū ʿUbayd al-Qaddāḥ consolidated their grip over Egypt. Under the Buyids the shrine now claimed to mark ʿAlī’s grave near Najaf was first promoted, whereas earlier no one had ever asserted that ʿAlī was buried there; he had, rather, been laid to rest in the governor’s palace in Kūfa. They merely recount that Hārūn al-Rashīd once came to a spot in that area and began pleading with the person interred there. People said, “It is ʿAlī, and he is asking his pardon for what he did to his children,” whereupon they proclaimed, “This is ʿAlī’s grave.” Others asserted that the grave belonged to al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah. A full discussion of the matter is given elsewhere.

Both the Buyids and the Banū ʿUbayd, immersed as they were in extremist Shiʿism, displayed in Baghdad on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ Rafidite symbols the like of which had never been seen: hanging coarse sackcloth on doorways, sending hired mourners through the markets, and inflaming passions to the point that fighting broke out which even kings could not quell. Because of these excesses, al-Khiraqī—the author of the Mukhtaṣar in jurisprudence—left Baghdad when public revilement of the early generations began there.

During the same period the Qarmatians in the East went so far as to seize the Black Stone, keeping it in their possession for some time, and to slaughter the pilgrims, casting their bodies into the Zamzam well.

(1) Those who came to Egypt and styled themselves as the Fatimids, attributing their lineage to Fatima az-Zahra—who is innocent in this respect—are, in fact, deceitful, depraved, and pagan individuals. They introduced rituals, dancing, and revelry into the Islamic state and transformed religious rites and acts of worship into taverns for the encouragement of forbidden practices. Numerous sincere scholars have exposed the falsehood and slander inherent in their actions.
