The Christians go to even greater excess in this matter than the Jews, as recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections: when Umm Ḥabībah and Umm Salama—may Allah be pleased with them—mentioned to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a church they had seen in Abyssinia, describing its beauty and the images displayed therein, he said, “When a righteous man among those people dies, they build a place of worship over his grave and set up those images; such people will be the worst of Allah’s creation on the Day of Resurrection.”

Christians often venerate the relics of their saints. It is therefore not far-fetched that they might tell some uninformed Muslims that a given tomb belongs to someone honored by the Muslims, so that the latter will join them in venerating it.

Why would they not, when they have already misled many simple-minded Muslims to the point that they baptize their children—claiming this will grant the child a long life (1)—and have induced them to visit the churches and chapels they exalt? Many ignorant Muslims now make vows at sites revered by Christians, and they even frequent Christian churches seeking blessings from their priests, bishops, and the like.

Those who magnify graves and shrines bear a striking resemblance to the Christians. When I arrived in Cairo, a learned monk met with me and debated the status of the Messiah and the Christian faith. I exposed its flaws and refuted the proofs he cited. I later heard that he had written a book rebutting the Muslims and denying the prophethood of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Some Muslims brought the work to me and read it aloud so that I might answer the Christians’ arguments and show their invalidity (2).

Among the last things I said to that Christian was: “You are polytheists….”
