Al-Tirmidhi narrated from him in his Jamiʿ a single hadith, which he placed in the Book of Fasting, under the chapter “What has been reported about keeping count of the crescent of Shaʿban for Ramadan.” He wrote:
“Muslim ibn Hajjaj narrated to us; Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us; Abu Muʿawiyah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Count the crescent of Shaʿban for (the coming of) Ramadan.’”
Al-ʿIraqi—cited by al-Mubarakfuri in Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi—remarked: “The compiler recorded nothing in his book from Muslim, the author of the Sahih, except this hadith. It is a narration between contemporaries, for both of them shared many of the same teachers.” Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar drew attention to this in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, saying, “He has nothing in al-Tirmidhi’s Jamiʿ other than this.” Likewise, al-Khazraji said in Khulasat Tahdhib al-Kamal: “Al-Tirmidhi transmitted from him only one hadith.” End quote.
For this reason, Khulasah, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, and its abridgment Taqrib mark Muslim with the symbol that denotes transmitters found in al-Tirmidhi, solely because of this lone report that al-Tirmidhi narrated from him.
