number of hadiths in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, once the repeated reports are removed, is about four thousand. Al-ʿIrāqī, in his annotations on Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ, writes: “He—meaning al-Nawawi—did not mention the total that includes the repetitions, which in fact exceeds the number in al-Bukhārī’s collection because of Muslim’s numerous parallel chains. I have also found a report from Abū al-Faḍl Aḥmad ibn Salamah stating that the collection contains twelve thousand hadiths.” Shaykh Muḥammad Fuʾād ʿAbd al-Bāqī, a contemporary scholar, personally counted the hadiths and, after omitting repetitions, arrived at 3,033. He said: “No one before me among those who have studied this Ṣaḥīḥ attempted such a task; at most they would put forward a figure, purely conjectural and improvised, unsupported by any sound basis. I have therefore produced this definitive tally to bring an end to the prevailing confusion and disorder—and all praise is due to Allah.”
