The Number of Hadiths in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī

Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar examined, itemized, and clarified—both concisely and in detail, in the introduction to Fatḥ al-Bārī—the total of the Prophetic (marfūʿ) narrations in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, whether fully connected or hanging. The following is a summary of his overall findings:

1. Fully connected Prophetic hadiths, including repetitions: 7,397 hadiths.
2. Hanging Prophetic hadiths, including repetitions: 1,341 hadiths.
3. Entries consisting of corroborating chains (mutābaʿāt) or notes highlighting variant transmissions: 344 hadiths.
4. The combined total of connected, hanging, and corroborative Prophetic narrations—counting repetitions: 9,082 hadiths.
5. Fully connected Prophetic hadiths, excluding repetitions: 2,602 hadiths.
6. Hanging hadiths, excluding repetitions: 159 hadiths.
7. Aggregate of Prophetic hadiths—whether connected or hanging—excluding repetitions: 2,761 hadiths.

These figures cover only Prophetic (marfūʿ) material; they do not include the mawqūf reports of the Companions, nor the maqṭūʿ statements of the Successors and those after them. After presenting the unrepeated total, Ibn Ḥajar observed: “There is a considerable difference between the number I have verified and the tally cited by Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ and others,” referring thereby to what was transmitted from
