His Death and the Span of His Life:
Imam al-Bukhārī—may Allah have mercy on him—passed away in Khartank, a village in the vicinity of Samarqand, on a Saturday night after the ʿIshāʾ prayer, the eve of Eid al-Fiṭr. He was buried on Eid day after the Ẓuhr prayer in the year 256 AH. His lifespan was sixty-two years, short of thirteen days—may Allah the Exalted envelop him in His mercy.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (d. 774 AH) remarks in al-Bidāyah wa-l-Nihāyah: “He left behind beneficial knowledge for all Muslims; his legacy of learning has not been cut off, rather it remains linked to the righteous deeds he performed during his life.”
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When a human being dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: beneficial knowledge by which people profit…”—the ḥadīth recorded by Muslim.
