Scholarly Attention to His Biography and the Transmission of His Accounts (may Allah have mercy on him)
When Imām al-Bukhārī (may Allah have mercy on him) undertook, with utmost diligence, to record the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, purge it of all impurities, and extract only the sound narrations, Allah granted him an enduring and truthful renown among later generations. From his own era until today, people continue to laud him, pray for Allah’s mercy upon him, and devote the greatest care to his comprehensive work, al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ. There is scarcely a book on history or biographical notices that is not embellished by mentioning his life, highlighting his stature, and relating his exploits, may Allah have mercy on him.
Thus, the ḥadith master al-Dhahabī (may Allah have mercy on him) includes his entry in Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ and, after citing some of his virtues, remarks, “I have devoted a large separate treatise to the merits of this Imām, and it contains astonishing material.”
Similarly, the ḥadith master Ibn Ḥajar records his biography in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, stating, “His virtues are extremely numerous; I have gathered them in a separate book and summarized their key points at the end of the work in which I discussed the suspended narrations of al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ.”
Ibn Ḥajar also writes about him at the close of Hidāy al-Sārī, the introduction to Fatḥ al-Bārī, quoting the praise of his own teachers and peers before adding, “Were I to open the door to the commendations of the scholars who came after his time, paper would be exhausted and breaths would run out; that is a sea without a shore.”
Al-Hāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr, in his chronicle al-Bidāyah wa-l-Nihāyah under the notable figures of the year 256 AH, says, “We have given him a comprehensive biography at the beginning of our commentary on his Ṣaḥīḥ; here we shall mention only a brief selection of it,” which he proceeds to present over three pages.
Ibn al-Subkī, in Ṭabaqāt al-Shāfiʿiyyah al-Kubrā, likewise writes his biography, lists some of his virtues, and then states, “Know that the merits of Abū ʿAbd Allāh are many indeed; it is impossible to encompass most of them. The books are filled with his virtues, and what we have cited here is sufficient and satisfying.”
On this occasion, it is fitting that I place before the reader a table that clarifies some
