al-Islam fi Ifriqiya Abr al-TarikhMuhammad Aman al-Jami

And this bold stand by the delegation of Muhammad’s followers was a lesson to both sides—the Quraysh and the Africans—and a message addressed to all their hearts, if only they understood. It was as though Ja‘far were saying to them: “Even if the delegation of Quraysh is dazzled by ‘Amr’s eloquence, his rhetoric and his captivating speech, and by the costly gifts he has offered the dignitaries as the price for securing our return; and even if those dignitaries regard us as weak and try to influence their king, the Negus, to hand us over to ‘Amr ibn al-‘Ās—despite all this, we are the party of Allah, the Most High, the All-Powerful. We rely upon Him and trust in Him, so we are untroubled, for He, glorified be He, is our Protector. What an excellent Protector and an excellent Helper! Yes, we are the party of Allah. Surely it is the party of Allah that will be victorious.”

These words of Ja‘far’s had their effect on the Negus. He asked them to appoint someone to represent them in discussion and dialogue with him and to answer the claims made by the delegation of Quraysh. Ja‘far said, “I will.” The Negus told him, “Speak.”

Ja‘far began with an introduction that showed his sound judgment and his understanding of how to accord people their due standing. He said, “You are a king in whose presence neither excessive talk nor injustice has any place.” After this brief introduction, Ja‘far asked the Negus to put the following questions to the delegation of Quraysh:

A- Are they slaves or free men?
2- Have they shed blood and then fled?
3- Have they taken people’s property and departed with it?

‘Amr answered all three questions in the negative: they were neither slaves, nor killers, nor thieves. The Negus said, “What, then, do you want from them?” ‘Amr replied, “We and they followed one religion, the religion of our forefathers. But they abandoned that religion and followed another.”

Thus you can see that ‘Amr confined the disagreement between them to their abandoning what their forefathers had worshipped and following a new faith—nothing more.
