Gifting the Reward of Reciting al-Fātiḥah to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)
Question: We live in a village, and whenever the townspeople wish to begin something they say, “al-Fātiḥah for the Prophet.” Does this practice have any basis in the Sacred Law, and is it wrong? Kindly advise us—may Allah reward you with goodness.
Answer: al-Fātiḥah is among the greatest sūrahs of the Qur’an—indeed, it is the Mother of the Qur’an—and it possesses enormous merit. Yet to recite it in the manner you describe—reading it on certain occasions for the Prophet, for someone else, for the soul of so-and-so, or for a deceased person—is an innovation, because nothing of the sort has been established from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
Reciting al-Fātiḥah is an act of worship, and every act of worship requires evidence. Thus anyone who claims that reciting al-Fātiḥah for the Prophet or for other deceased persons is legislated must produce proof; if he cannot, his claim is rejected as an innovation. No legal proof exists for reciting al-Fātiḥah for the soul of the Prophet or for anyone else. It is one of the innovations for which Allah has sent down no authority. Therefore, al-Fātiḥah is not to be recited for the Prophet or for anyone else—this is the first point.
The second point is that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has no need for others to dedicate the reward of their acts of worship to him, except where a specific text establishes it. He already receives a reward equal to the rewards of those who follow him, as he said: “Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward equivalent to the rewards of those who follow him.” Consequently, every legislated act of worship that a Muslim performs and for which he attains reward likewise confers upon the Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) an equal reward—without anyone having to gift it to him, recite on his behalf, or the like. The Messenger has no need for such gifting; rather, what is prescribed with respect to—
