Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ collectively and aloud
after every obligatory prayer
Question: What is the ruling on sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ collectively and out loud after each prayer?
Answer: Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ is legislated, for Allah the Exalted says, “Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and salute him with all respect” (al-Aḥzāb 33:56). The Prophet ﷺ also said, “Send blessings upon me, for your blessings upon me reach me wherever you may be,” and he said, “Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him in return.”
Sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ is among the finest acts of worship and carries tremendous reward; however, assigning it to a particular time or fixing a specific manner for it is not permissible unless there is evidence to authorize that specification.
Accordingly, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ in unison after the obligatory prayer, in the collective, audible form described by the questioner, is one of the innovations newly introduced into the religion, for which Allah has sent down no authority.
As for an individual Muslim sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ by himself—without coordinating with others and without creating a collective voice—this is one of the best deeds. Yet he should not bind himself to doing so after every prayer, because such a practice has not been reported. What has been reported is to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ in the final tashahhud. Committing to it after the salām is therefore impermissible. Nevertheless, if a person does so occasionally, without linking up with a group and without adopting the particular method mentioned in the question, there is no harm in that.
