Answer: First, the incident concerning Ibn ʿUmar was not with his mother but with his father, ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him. Regarding the situation you have described, namely that your wife quarrels with your mother and that your mother is asking you to divorce her, it is clear that this woman is harming your mother, and it is not permissible for you to allow that to continue. If you are able to restrain her and prevent these altercations, and if you can bring about reconciliation between your mother and your wife, then that is incumbent upon you, and you must not go straight to divorce. Alternatively, if you can place your wife in one residence and your mother in another and you have the means to do so, that is another solution. If you are unable to do any of this and your wife persists in arguing with and upsetting your mother, then there is no escape from divorce—both in obedience to your mother and to remove the harm from her. Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will grant him something better in its place. In any case, address the matter as best you can, and perhaps Allah, Exalted and Glorified, will set your affairs right. Make divorce only the last resort if you can find no other solution.
