Majmu FatawaSalih Al-Fawzan

Answer: Yes. Allah, mighty and exalted, has indeed commanded the believers to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong according to their ability. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; and if he cannot, then with his heart—and that is the weakest level of faith.” In another narration he said: “Beyond that there is not even a mustard seed’s worth of faith.”

Parents are no exception. If they commit a sin, it is obligatory to object to it and to advise them, and this is one of the greatest forms of filial devotion. It is not, as the questioner imagined, an act of undutifulness; on the contrary, it is an act of kindness, for your aim is to save them and deliver them from the Fire.

You have heard what Allah tells us about Abraham, the Close Friend of Allah, that he began by advising his father:
“When he said to his father, ‘My dear father, why do you worship something that neither hears nor sees nor can benefit you in any way? My dear father, knowledge has come to me that did not come to you; so follow me, and I will guide you to a straight path. My dear father, do not worship Satan, for Satan has always been disobedient to the Most Merciful. My dear father, I fear that a punishment from the Most Merciful will afflict you, and you will become a companion of Satan.’” (Maryam 19:42-45)

Thus Abraham, peace be upon him, began by counseling his father, calling him to Allah and striving to rescue him from the Fire. This shows that advising one’s parents is among the most emphatic obligations, and that one should begin with them before advising anyone else. It is a form of dutifulness—indeed, one of the greatest acts of dutifulness toward them. However, it must be done with wisdom, gentle exhortation, soft speech, and a pleasant manner, treating them with the utmost kindness in the hope that Allah, exalted is He, will guide them.
