helping me to get married, despite the fact that he has money while I possess nothing save my salary, which merely covers the family’s expenses. On top of that I borrow from people to meet those costs that I assumed after he travelled. Does the Sacred Law oblige my father to pay for my marriage? What should I do with him when he is so obstinate—he carries out only what he himself decides—although he spends the night in prayer and performs all the acts of worship? He says, “You have been educated; I owe you nothing more,” even though he knows perfectly well that my salary is not in line with the household expenses he left behind. Is it a duty upon a father to marry off his son or not?
Answer: First, we advise you to show dutifulness to your father and treat him well. Even if, as you have said, some harshness issues from him toward you, you must be patient, bear it, and continue to act kindly toward him. Do not become annoyed, no matter how much dutifulness you show your father, for such conduct is righteous, and a person is commanded to repel evil with good when dealing with people—how much more with one’s own parent, the closest person to him. I see no justification for your complaints about him or for your irritation; rather, you must be patient and not disclose this to others. Allah, exalted and majestic, never lets the reward of anyone who does good go to waste. Whatever dutifulness and kindness you show your father is something that is obligatory upon you.
As for whether he is obliged to marry you off, the matter requires some detail. A father is obliged to marry off his son if the son is poor, owns nothing, and is unable to marry on his own, for this falls under maintenance, and financial support for a needy relative is obligatory upon the wealthy relative—including marrying him off and safeguarding his chastity.
However, if you are able to marry and to earn, as you have stated—that you are educated, have a job and an income—then your father is not obliged to marry you off; rather, you should arrange your marriage from your own earnings and income.
In any case, what I see is that you should rely upon Allah, seek a livelihood, and work.
