Sending Prayers upon the Angels
Question: Is it permissible to invoke prayers upon the angels because of their virtue and lofty rank? If it is permissible, may I attach that invocation to the prayers upon the Messenger ﷺ in the tashahhud of the ritual prayer or not?

Answer: Yes, invoking prayers upon the angels is legislated. One may say, “ʿalayhim al-ṣalātu wa-salām” (upon them be prayers and peace) or “al-salāmu ʿalayhim” (peace be upon them), for they are honoured servants—creatures from among the creation of Allah whom He has favoured over others. Allah, Exalted is He, says of them, “Rather, they are honoured servants” (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:26); and He says, “Indeed, appointed over you are keepers, noble and recording” (al-Infitar 82:10-11); and He says, “In the hands of emissaries, noble and righteous” (ʿAbasa 80:15-16), and so on. They therefore possess their own stature, virtue, and honour, and it is prescribed to invoke prayers and peace upon them; there is nothing objectionable about that—indeed, it is an act of devotion.

Question: May I add the prayers upon them to the prayers upon the Messenger ﷺ in the tashahhud?

Answer: No. In the tashahhud one must restrict oneself to the wording that has been transmitted. However, when we say, “Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah,” that wording includes every righteous servant in the heavens or on the earth, and the angels are encompassed by it.
