Question: What is the required amount of food?
Answer: Each poor person is to be given half a sāʿ (roughly 1.5 kg) of the staple food commonly eaten in that country; this is the more precautionary view.

Question: About eight years ago I deliberately broke the fast for two days in Ramadan without any excuse, and until now I have neither made up those days nor offered any expiation. What must I do now?
Answer: You were wrong to break your fast during the day in Ramadan without a lawful excuse. A Muslim who believes in Allah and the Last Day is not permitted to break the fast in Ramadan without a valid reason, for fasting in Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam. Treating it lightly or breaking it without excuse is a sign of weak and deficient faith. Therefore you must fast for Allah.
In this matter you are required to do three things:
- First: Make a sincere repentance to Allah for this grave sin.
- Second: Make up those two days without delay, thereby clearing yourself of the great obligation you have neglected.
- Third: Because another Ramadan—or more than one—has passed before you made up those two days, you must also feed one poor person for each day in addition to making them up.
