is what I did to my wife permissible? Does feeding the poor clear my obligation, and may I give food because I am unable to fast? May I also feed the poor on behalf of my wife, since she is currently breastfeeding?
Answer: Your breaking the fast on account of illness is permitted, for Allah the Exalted says, “Whoever among you is ill or on a journey must make up an equal number of other days” (al-Baqarah 2:184). As for your ordering—or forcing—your wife to break her fast, I see no justification for it; she was neither ill nor travelling, nor did she have any other valid excuse. You were mistaken when you compelled her to break the fast without a lawful reason. Nonetheless, now that it has happened, your wife must make up those days. If another Ramadan has passed before she made them up and she had no excuse, then along with making them up she must feed one poor person for every missed day.
If, however, she broke the fast because she is breastfeeding and fasting would harm her child and diminish her milk, then breaking the fast is valid, for she does have a legitimate excuse. In that case she is required not only to make up the fasts but also to feed one poor person for each missed day; when a woman breaks the fast on account of her nursing infant, she must both make up the days and feed the poor.
