Answer: What you mentioned about your keenness to pray is something commendable, and we ask Allah to increase you in it. Guarding the prayer is among the most important obligations, for the prayer is the pillar of Islam. Allah, exalted is He, says: “Guard strictly the prayers, and the middle prayer” (al-Baqarah 2:238). He also says: “And those who keep a guard over their prayers—such are the inheritors who will inherit Paradise; they will abide therein forever” (al-Muʾminūn 23:9-11). And He says: “Those who are constant in their prayer—they will be honoured in gardens” (al-Maʿārij 70:34-35).
Safeguarding the prayer is a sign of faith; whoever preserves his prayer preserves his religion. The first matter about which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If that is in order, the rest of his religious affairs will likewise be sound.
To safeguard the prayer means to perform it at the times Allah has prescribed. He, the Most High, says: “Indeed, the prayer has been decreed upon the believers at fixed times” (al-Nisāʾ 4:103). Thus, one of the most critical aspects of guarding the prayer is to offer it within its appointed time, and among the deeds most beloved to Allah is performing the prayer punctually. A Muslim does not let any worldly occupation take precedence over his prayer, for prayer occupies first place in the believer’s life and its time is reserved; nothing else may encroach upon it. In praising the believers, Allah says: “Men whom neither trade nor sale distract from the remembrance of Allah, the establishment of prayer, and the giving of zakāh” (al-Nūr 24:37). And He says: “O you who have believed, when the call is made for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trading; that is better for you, if you only knew. Then, when the prayer has concluded, disperse through the land and seek of Allah’s bounty” (al-Jumuʿah 62:9-10).
