An Imam Who Seeks Intercession through the Righteous
Question: If a person believes in—or endorses—seeking intercession through the righteous, is it valid to pray behind him?
Answer: For someone to lead the prayer he must be a Muslim of upright faith, character, and conduct, a model of firm adherence to the Sunnah, free of innovation, and far removed from associationism and its avenues. Accordingly, anyone who adopts the practice of seeking intercession through the righteous and the “saints,” or through the dead—as is widespread today among those who venerate graves—and who either engages in it himself or deems it permissible, may not be followed in prayer, because his creed is unsound.
If, moreover, his “intercession through the righteous” consists of actually asking them to fulfil needs, remove hardships, calling upon them by name, and seeking their help, then he is guilty of major associationism that expels a person from the religion. Such a one is no longer a Muslim, much less someone who may be appointed imam of a mosque.
Muslims must therefore take heed and allow only someone whose creed is sound and whose behaviour conforms to the Book and the Sunnah—avoiding innovation and open sin—to lead them in prayer. Indeed, many scholars rule that even the openly sinful Muslim whose sin is practical may not lead the prayer; how much more disqualified is a corrupt innovator whose very creed is defective! The matter is graver still when, as described, he calls upon the dead and asks them to meet his needs, for this is major associationism. His own prayer and the prayer of those behind him are invalid until he repents to Allah, returns to the fold of oneness (tawhid), and dedicates all acts of worship exclusively to Allah.
We ask Allah to awaken the Muslims to an understanding of their religion, to enable them to hold fast to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet, and to abandon every innovation, superstition, and newly-invented practice they have imagined to belong to the religion, while it is in fact completely alien to it.
