so when we come to perform ablution or to draw water, some drops of that water from which the dogs have drunk may splash onto our clothes or onto the water-skins. Does this affect the purity of our garments, and with how many washings must we remove it? Do the skins themselves have to be washed or not?
If a dog’s impurity were to touch the garment directly, with how many washings must it be purified?
Answer: We see no reason for such stringency. As long as the leaked water has collected into a large quantity, the dog’s drinking from it or passing through it has no effect, because the Prophet ﷺ was asked about water found in the open wilderness that wild beasts visit, and he said: “When water reaches two qullahs it does not carry impurity.” He also said: “Water is pure; nothing renders it impure.”
Accordingly, the basic ruling concerning this water is that it is pure and purifying, and it does not make whatever it touches impure—especially when the amount is large, as we have mentioned.
As for a case where a dog’s impurity actually soils the garment, such as being stained by the dog’s urine or saliva, it is purified by washing it until the impurity is removed; one washes it until he is certain that the impurity is gone, just like any other impurity. And Allah, the Most High, knows best.
