be pleased with him—realised this point and said: “O people, you recite this verse: ‘O you who believe! Take care of your own selves; those who have gone astray will not harm you so long as you are rightly guided’ (5:105). Yet I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, ‘When people see a wrong-doer and do not restrain him, it is close to the time that Allah will engulf them all in a punishment from Him.’” By this statement he made it clear that there is no contradiction between the verse and the ḥadith, and that whoever thinks the verse means abandoning the duty of enjoining right and forbidding wrong has misunderstood it. A Verse and a ḥadith

Question: What is the authenticity of the ḥadith that says, “Whoever changes his religion, kill him”? What does it mean? How can it be reconciled with Allah’s words: “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256), with His words: “Had your Lord willed, everyone on earth would have believed, all of them together; so will you compel people until they become believers?” (10:99), and with the ḥadith: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If they do so, their blood and wealth are protected from me except by a right due in Islam, and their reckoning is with Allah”? Does this not indicate that embracing the religion is by choice and not through coercion?
