Majmu FatawaSalih Al-Fawzan

“when the lote-tree was covered by that which covered it” – meaning that something tremendous from Allah’s command enshrouded it, a reality whose description is known only to Allah.
“The sight did not swerve” – the gaze of Muhammad ﷺ did not turn right or left away from its aim;
“nor did it transgress” – it did not go beyond its limit.

This reflects the Prophet’s consummate courtesy, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him: he remained precisely in the station to which Allah raised him; he neither fell short, nor went beyond, nor deviated from it. That is the highest form of refined conduct, surpassing everyone before and after him. Shortcomings usually arise in one of four ways: a servant may fail to carry out what he was commanded; or perform it with negligence; or exceed the bounds; or veer off to the right or the left. All of these possibilities are absent from him ﷺ.

“And indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord” – that is, he beheld Paradise, Hellfire, and other matters shown to the Prophet ﷺ on the Night Journey. Allah knows best.

Question: What is the meaning of the two noble verses: “And that there is nothing for man except what he strives for” (al-Najm 53:39) and “Those who believe and whose descendants follow them in faith – We shall join their descendants with them, and We shall not diminish anything of their deeds” (al-Tur 52:21)? Is there any abrogation or contradiction between them, and what benefit do we derive from them?
Answer: A difficulty seems to arise between the two verses. The first verse teaches that a person possesses only his own striving and cannot lay claim to the striving of anyone else – “And that there is nothing for man except what he strives for”; his entitlement is confined to his own deeds, and only his own efforts will benefit him. The other verse, however, indicates that
