his community, making it one of the greatest favors: “Allah has sent down to you the Book and wisdom and has taught you what you did not know. The bounty of Allah upon you is truly immense” (al-Nisāʾ 4:113). This is therefore among the most magnificent blessings that Allah has bestowed upon this noble Prophet and upon his ummah until the Day of Resurrection, for their happiness and salvation in this world and the Hereafter depend upon it. Yet Allah is perfectly able to remove this Qur’an and take away this favor—just as He is the One who sent it down, He is able to lift it up. Realizing this obliges the servants to thank Allah, majestic and exalted, for this blessing so that they may draw benefit from it and profit by it.

Interpretation of Sūrah Tāhā

Question: Allah the Exalted says, “But whoever turns away from My remembrance, for him is a constricted life, and We shall raise him on the Day of Resurrection blind” (Tāhā 20:124). What is the explanation of this verse? May Allah reward you with every good.

Answer: Allah, majestic and exalted, says, “He said, ‘Descend from it, both of you, all together; some of you are enemies to others. Then, whenever guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will not go astray nor will he be miserable. But whoever turns away from My remembrance, for him is a constricted life, and We shall raise him on the Day of Resurrection blind’” (Tāhā 20:123–124).

In the first verse Allah informs us that whoever follows the Qur’an and acts upon it, He—exalted is He—guarantees that such a person will neither go astray in this world nor be wretched in the Hereafter.

In the second verse He clarifies that whoever turns away from the Qur’an and does not act upon it will be punished with two punishments:

  1. He will live a constricted, miserable life. This has been interpreted as the punishment of the grave, for he will be tormented therein. It can also encompass hardship in worldly life as well as in the grave; thus the verse is general. In sum, Allah has threatened him with a wretched life filled
