(3) …dedication, effort, and time; it also demands understanding and an attentive heart. That is what true learning is.
His phrase “four masail” (matters) refers to four separate topics of study; they are called masail because a Muslim must be questioned about them and give them full attention.
(4) With regard to the word “knowledge,” what is meant here is the sacred knowledge (al-‘ilm al-shar‘i), for this is the knowledge whose acquisition is obligatory. Every Muslim—male or female, free or enslaved, rich or poor, ruler or commoner—must learn these four matters.
Scholars term this obligation fard ‘ayn (a personal duty). The five daily prayers are required of both men and women, and congregational prayer in the mosques is required of men; therefore the author says “it is incumbent upon us,” not “upon some of us.” In other words, the entire community of Muslims is addressed. This belongs to the type of knowledge that is personally obligatory, for knowledge is of two kinds:
1. That whose acquisition is personally obligatory, for no one is excused for ignorance of it; the religion cannot be properly upheld without it, such as the pillars of Islam…

عناية وجهد ووقت، ويحتاج إلى فهم وإلى حضور قلب، هذا هو التعلم.
قوله: أربع مسائل: يعني مباحث، سميت مسائل لأنها يجب أن يُسأل عنها وأن يُعنى بها.
[٤] قوله: العلم: المراد بالعلم هنا هو العلم الشرعي؛ لأنه هو الذي يجب تعلمه، وهذه المسائل يجب تعلمها على كل مسلم من ذكر أو أنثى أو حر أو عبد أو غني أو فقير أو ملك أو صعلوك، كل مسلم يجب عليه أن يتعلم هذه المسائل الأربع.
وهذا ما يسميه العلماء بالواجب العيني، وهو الذي يجب على كل أحد من المسلمين، فالصلوات الخمس على الرجال والنساء، وصلاة الجماعة في المساجد على الرجال هذا واجب على كل فرد من المسلمين أن يتعلمها؛ ولذلك قال: يجب علينا، ولم يقل: يجب على بعضنا، وإنما قال: يجب علينا، يعني معشر المسلمين، فهذا من العلم الذي يجب تعلمه على الأعيان؛ لأن العلم على قسمين:
الأول: ما يجب تعلمه على الأعيان، فلا يعذر أحد بجهله وهو ما لا يستقيم الدين إلا به، مثل أركان الإسلام
