The four matters encompassed by Surah al-‘Asr
Treatise One
Knowledge
Know—may Allah have mercy on you [2]
(2) The expression “i‘lam” (Know) draws the reader’s attention to the weight of what is about to be stated; whenever the author says “Know,” he signals that the forthcoming point is of consequence. Linguistically, i‘lam is the imperative of ‘ilm (knowledge), which is defined as perceiving a thing in accordance with what it truly is, or forming a conception that matches reality. Grasping or conceiving something contrary to reality is jahl (ignorance), the antithesis of knowledge.
The phrase “rahimaka Allah” (may Allah have mercy on you) is a prayer offered for the student: the teacher asks Allah to envelop the seeker of knowledge in His mercy. Beginning with such benevolent words and a righteous supplication reflects the instructor’s gentleness toward the learner, which in turn makes the admonition more persuasive and encourages the student’s receptivity.
