Sharh Thalathat al-UsulSalih Al-Fawzan

The Second Treatise
Three Matters Every Muslim Must Learn and Put into Practice

Know—may Allah have mercy upon you—[1] that it is obligatory for every Muslim, man and woman alike, to learn these three matters and act upon them. [2]

(1) On the expression iʿlam (know): as noted earlier, this word is used to draw special attention to what follows and means “learn, understand, and be certain.” The phrase raḥimaka Allah (may Allah have mercy on you) is a prayer for the reader. It exemplifies the teacher’s duty to be gentle with the student, to pray for him, and to encourage him, for such kindness is one of the most effective teaching methods. He should not meet the learner with harshness or severity, which only repels people from knowledge. The wording also reflects the shaykh’s sincerity and his desire to offer sound, beneficial guidance. (2) On his statement annahu yajibu (that it is obligatory): in the terminology of uṣul (legal methodology), wujub (obligation) refers to something that must be done; usul scholars define it as an act whose performer is rewarded and whose abandoner is punished. Linguistically, the root conveys the idea of something fixed and inevitable.
