(13) Al-Bukhari: Muhammad b. Ismail b. Ibrahim al-Bukhari, from the city of Bukhara in the East, the foremost imam of hadith and a mountain of memorisation, author of the Sahih, the most authentic book after the Book of Allah. His words, “Knowledge comes before speech and action,” mean that deeds are of benefit only when based on knowledge; a deed founded on ignorance benefits no one and will instead become a burden and source of misguidance for its doer on the Day of Resurrection. Therefore, one must acquire knowledge before acting. His phrase, “And the evidence,” refers—regarding this chapter heading—to the divine saying: “So know that there is no deity but Allah, and seek forgiveness for your sin,” where Allah begins with knowledge first.
