and whoever invites people to worship himself ⦗80⦘.
They also said in another verse, “Are our gods better, or is he?” (Q 43:58)—meaning Jesus, upon him be peace. Allah continues: “They put this to you only for the sake of argument; they are a contentious people. He is nothing but a servant on whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel” (Q 43:58–59). Thus he is a servant of Allah and does not consent to being worshiped besides Him; indeed, Allah sent him to repudiate such worship: “I said to them only what You commanded me: Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord” (Q 5:117). Whoever is worshiped while being displeased with it, therefore, is not included in this threat and is not a taghut, because he disavows it; a taghut is one who is pleased to be worshiped instead of Allah.
(80) The third category is anyone who calls people to worship himself. This includes the chiefs of the polytheists who invite others to their own worship—for example Pharaoh, who said, “I am your highest lord” (Q 79:24), Nimrod, and the extremist Sufis who urge people to venerate them even after death, telling their followers: “When matters overwhelm you, come to my grave; only a handful of earth separates you and me.” In this way they direct people to their graves.
