Sharh Thalathat al-UsulSalih Al-Fawzan

“Say, ‘If you truly love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Say, ‘Obey Allah and the Messenger.’ But if they turn away, then indeed Allah does not love the disbelievers.’” (Āl ʿImrān 3:31–32).

So anyone who follows someone other than the Messenger is, by that very act, taking a false deity (ṭāghūt); and whoever invites people to follow him, claiming, “I receive the command directly from Allah,” is one of the greatest ṭawāghīt on earth—Allah’s protection is sought.

The author’s phrase, “or is obeyed,” means that obedience is due only to Allah and His Messenger in what they declare lawful or unlawful. Allah the Exalted says, “O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. If you differ about anything, refer it back to Allah and the Messenger, if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and yields the finest outcome.” (Al-Nisāʾ 4:59)

Thus, the lawful is what Allah has made lawful, and the unlawful is what Allah has forbidden. No one may share with Allah in declaring things permissible or prohibited; therefore, whoever legislates in this way—or whoever obeys such legislation—Allah has judged him a polytheist.

He, mighty and majestic, says: “So eat of that over which the name of Allah has been pronounced, if you are believers in His revelations. And why should you not eat of that over which the name of Allah has been pronounced, when He has already made clear to you what He has forbidden to you—except when compelled by necessity? Many indeed lead others astray by their whims without knowledge. Your Lord knows best the transgressors. Abandon both the outward sin and the inward; those who earn sin will be repaid for what they used to commit. And do not eat of that over which the name of Allah has not been pronounced; verily that is grave disobedience. The devils whisper to their friends so that they may dispute with you; but if you obey them, you will surely be idolaters.” (Al-Anʿām 6:118-121)
