Thus, Muslims will be divided into several groups on the Day of Resurrection:
-
The first group comprises those who will not be brought to account at all; they will enter Paradise without any reckoning or punishment, as mentioned in the hadith of the seventy thousand who enter Paradise without reckoning or torment.
-
The second group consists of people whose reckoning will be easy—a mere presentation of their deeds without any cross-examination. They, too, are among the fortunate. The Almighty says: “As for him who is given his record in his right hand, he will receive an easy reckoning and return to his people joyful” (al-Inshiqāq 84:7-9).
-
The third group are those who undergo a detailed, argumentative reckoning; they stand in genuine peril, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever is subjected to a meticulous reckoning will be punished.”
With regard to the disbelievers, the scholars differ: Will they be called to account or not? Some maintain that the disbelievers will not be reckoned, for they have no good deeds, and they will simply be taken to the Fire because they are not—
