And the evidence for his passing is the Almighty’s statement: “Indeed, you will die, and indeed, they will die. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will all dispute before your Lord.” (al-Zumar 39:30–31) [69].
(69) Once Allah had perfected the religion through the Prophet ﷺ and completed His favour by means of him, He took him back to Himself, for such is Allah’s way with His creation: “Every soul shall taste death” (Al Imran 3:185). Prophets and messengers are part of this universal rule—every soul shall taste death. Accordingly, the Prophet ﷺ did die and passed from this world to his Lord. This is established by revealed text, by the unanimous agreement of the ummah, and by rational analogy.
The textual proof is Allah’s statement: “You are mayyit and they too are mayyit” (al-Zumar 39:30), informing the Messenger ﷺ that he will die. The word mayyit denotes one who will die in the future, whereas mayt—lightened in pronunciation—refers to someone whose soul has already departed, as in “Was he who was mayt and We gave him life…” (al-Anam 6:122). Thus a mayt is the person whose spirit has left his body, while a mayyit is one who is still alive but destined to die.
