(56) Before and after the Hijrah, you should learn how the revelation first came to him—peace be upon him—when it began, which verse proves his prophethood, and which verse proves his messengership. Collect the verses that attest to his prophethood and those that attest to his being sent, for you must know these things. Learn his lineage and the tribe he belongs to, for the Arabs are composed of tribes and he is indisputably an Arab. These matters about the Messenger—Allah bless him and grant him peace—must be known by studying the relevant Quranic verses and hadiths and by consulting his sirah and his call, so that you may know these facts about your Prophet, whom you are commanded to follow and emulate. (57) This is his personal name and lineage. His name is Muhammad—peace be upon him. He has other names, yet the most famous of them is Muhammad, which Allah mentions in several Quranic verses: “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” (Surah al-Fath, 48:29); “Muhammad is only a messenger—messengers have passed on before him” (Surah Al-Imran, 3:144); and “Muhammad is not the father of any of your men” (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:40).
