Or he worships Him with vigilant awareness, knowing that Allah sees him; therefore he does his deeds well, for Allah is watching him. The person of excellence worships Allah either with an inward vision of Him—this is the more complete state—or with vigilant awareness, certain that Allah sees him in every place and in every act he performs. This is iḥsān.
He then said, “You have spoken the truth. Now inform me about the Hour,” meaning: When will the Hour be established? No one knows the answer to this question except Allah, for only Allah knows its precise moment.
We are sure that the Hour will indeed come; we harbor no doubt about it, and whoever does doubt it is a disbeliever. We know it must occur, yet Allah has not told us the exact time, nor has He clarified it; He has reserved that knowledge for Himself. Allah, exalted is He, says, “Indeed, Allah alone has knowledge of the Hour” (Qur’an 31:34); and He says, “They ask you about the Hour—when will it be set? Say, ‘Its knowledge rests only with my Lord; none will reveal it at its proper time but He’” (Qur’an 7:187). He alone knows it, glorified be He. And He says, “With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him” (Qur’an 6:59)—among them is the time when the Hour will be established.
