(11) These four matters must be learned in detail. Is there any proof for the shaykh’s statement? He promised that he would say nothing without evidence—so where is it? He replied: The proof is the Almighty’s words: “In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. By time, truly mankind is in loss, except those who believe and perform righteous deeds and enjoin one another to truth and enjoin one another to patience” (Surah al-Asr). • “Except those who believe” points to the first matter: knowledge, for faith can only be built on knowledge—namely, knowledge of Allah, of His Messenger, and of the religion of Islam with its evidences. • The second matter is “and perform righteous deeds,” that is, acting upon that knowledge. • The third is “and enjoin one another to truth,” meaning inviting others to the knowledge and its practice. • The fourth is “and enjoin one another to patience,” that is, remaining patient when harmed while calling to that knowledge and practice.
