Evidence for the Pillars of Faith
The proof for these six pillars is the Almighty’s saying: “Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west; true righteousness is to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets.” (Qur’an 2:177) [44]
(44) After outlining the six pillars of faith, the shaykh immediately provided their proofs from both the Quran and the Sunnah, for every matter of religion—whether worship, creed, or legal rulings—must rest on evidence; without evidence it is invalid. Accordingly, he first cited the Quranic proof, then the prophetic proof.
The Quranic evidence is Allah’s saying: “Laysa al-birra an tuwallu wujuhakum…” (Quran 2:177). Here, al-birr (virtuous conduct) refers to every good deed that draws a person near to Allah and leads to His Paradise; thus all forms of righteousness fall under the term birr. It is a comprehensive word that includes every kind of good and all acts of obedience, and it overlaps with the term taqwa (piety).
Hence, birr and taqwa are broad designations encompassing every trait of goodness. The phrase “Laysa al-birra an tuwallu wujuhakum qibala al-mashriqi wa-l-maghrib” is a rebuttal to the Jews who objected to the change of the qibla.
