The Pillars of Faith
He said, “Its pillars are six: to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in the divine decree, both its good and its evil.” ⦗43⦘
…from doing good deeds, seeking knowledge, or asking about matters he finds unclear—such modesty is blameworthy, for it is mere embarrassment.
The branches of iman (faith) are many, as you know—over seventy. Imam al-Bayhaqi composed an extensive work detailing these branches, and an abridged version of it has been printed.
Among the proofs scholars cite that iman consists of verbal declaration, inward conviction, and bodily action is the Prophet’s saying: “Its highest branch is la ilaha illa Allah (there is no deity but Allah),” which points to the tongue’s utterance; his saying, “Its lowest is removing harm from the road,” which is an outward deed proving that actions are part of iman; and his saying, “Modesty is a branch of iman,” which relates to the heart, for modesty resides there. This hadith therefore shows that iman is articulated by the tongue, believed in the heart, and manifested through the limbs.
(43) Iman is composed of pillars (arkan) and branches (shuʿab). What is the difference between the two?
أركان الإيمان
قال: وأركانه ستة: أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللهِ، وَمَلائِكَتِهِ، وَكُتُبِهِ، وَرُسُلِهِ، وَالْيَوْمِ الآخر، وتؤمن بالقدر خيره وشره. [٤٣]
من فعل الخير، وطلب العلم، والسؤال عما أشكل عليه، فهذا حياء مذموم لأنه خجل.
وشعب الإيمان كثيرة كما عرفتم، بضع وسبعون، وقد كتب الإمام البيهقي مؤلفا كبيرا بين فيه شعب الإيمان، وله مختصر مطبوع.
ومن أدلة العلماء على أن الإيمان قول باللسان، واعتقاد بالقلب، وعمل بالجوارح، قوله ﷺ: «أعلاها لا إله إلا الله» ، هذا يدل على القول، وقوله ﷺ: «أدناها إماطة الأذى عن الطريق» ، هذا عمل دل على أن الأعمال من الإيمان، وقوله ﷺ: «الحياء شعبة من الإيمان» ، هذا في القلب، الحياء إنما يكون في القلب، فهذا دليل على أن الإيمان قول باللسان، واعتقاد بالقلب، وعمل بالجوارح.
