Second Level: Faith
Definition of Faith
The second level is faith (īmān). It consists of seventy-odd branches: the highest is the statement lā ilāha illā Allah (there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah); the lowest is removing something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith. [42]
(42) Faith (iman) is broader than Islam: every believer (mumin) is a Muslim, yet not every Muslim is a believer. Hence iman is more general in its concept but more specific in regard to the people who truly possess it. Linguistically, iman means “to affirm as true”; the Quran quotes the brothers of Yusuf saying, “You will not believe us” (Yusuf 12:17), meaning “you will not consider us truthful.” In the technical usage of the Sharia, as defined by Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaah, iman consists of utterance with the tongue, conviction in the heart, and action with the limbs; it increases through obedience and decreases through disobedience. Under this definition, it constitutes a legal (shar‘i) reality, and realities are of three types: linguistic, legal, and customary.
